Celebrating Lily-of-the-Valley Day

This Bank Holiday weekend brings many reasons to celebrate – 1st of May is Lily-of-the-Valley day in the world of perfumery and also some countries will celebrate Mother’s Day on the first Sunday of May which is tomorrow 🙂

So for me this weekend is all about the beautiful fragrant spring flowers – Lilies-of-the-Valley.

The scent of muguet cannot be extracted from the flowers so perfumers have to re-create it. The first fragrance that pops into my head when I think of this special bloom is Diorissimo by Christian Dior. I got few drops of it from House of Fraser, the store that closed its doors in Ireland early last year, just before or around the time when covid lockdowns hit us. Unfortunately, I cannot be too sure if it is eau de parfum or eau de toilette version. However, the statement is clear and simple – Diorissimo celebrates lily-of-the-valley in all its glory as “Christian Dior’s lucky flower and the emblem of Dior Couture”, quoting the brand.

Diorissimo was officially launched in 1956, the nose behind this classic is perfumer Edmond Roudnitska.

Light, fresh, and spreading joy – that is how I see it. I always liked lilies-of-the-valley and have lovely memories of sniffing the flowers in Lithuanian forests. And I will always associate this fragrance with something beautiful from the past.

In memory of Roudnitska’s Diorissimo and other vintage lily-of-the-valley fragrances, Pissara Umavijani and the house of Dusita has just launched their newest (eleventh) perfume – Cavatina. The muguet accord in this fragrance is a modern approach with vintage footprints. I cannot wait to try it!

Until then, let’s listen to a different kind of Cavatina – this time performed by 2Cellos. Beautiful piece of music ❤

Do you have a favourite lily-of-the-valley fragrance? Do you like the scent of this fragile flower?
